The NHS recently advised that pregnant ladies shouldn’t really drink at all. Many pregnant ladies go off the taste of alcohol anyway, but sometimes it can be hard to hold back. We would say that a rare drink is fine. Whatever you do just make sure you don’t drink more than 6 units of alcohol per week. And try to spread your units out. Binge drinking, i.e. drinking more than 6 units in a single session, can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). This can result in the baby suffering from restricted growth, facial abnormalities, heart defects or learning and behaviour disorders.
To help avoid drinking alcohol, arrange to meet friends in a cafe instead of a pub or bar. Chose alcohol free wine or beer, a Virgin Mary, tonic with ice and lemon, iced fruit teas, lemonade, milkshakes or yoghurt drinks. You should also avoid salty snacks, as they may encourage you to want alcohol.
