It can be worrying if your newborn baby catches a cold. To ease his breathing, raise the end of the bed so that his head is slightly higher than his body. Get saline drops and put a few in his nose prior to each feed. Calpol should not be given until the baby is over two weeks old.
Bronchiolitis is a virus when air passages in the baby’s lungs become swollen which makes it more difficult for him to breathe. It starts with a runny nose and sometimes with a cough and temperature. After a few days the cough may worsen. Breathing becomes faster and can sound noisy. If feeding becomes difficult try breastfeeding more frequently. If it doesn’t get better after five days contact your GP or health visitor for advice.
